Excluded shots and data quality
Simulator and launch monitor data is not always perfect. GSCaddie marks shots it considers unreliable so they do not skew your averages, while keeping them visible and restorable in the round. This article explains how that works and how to read the two quality markers in the UI.
What GSCaddie tracks
| What | Type | Where from | How GSCaddie uses it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shot exclusion | yes/no | Computed | Marks a shot as unreliable. Excluded shots are dropped from all analytics (carry averages, dispersion, strokes gained) but still count as strokes on your scorecard. You can also exclude a shot yourself; manual exclusions are preserved across re-ingest. |
| Estimate badge | UI marker | Computed | A subtle "est." pill marks numbers GSCaddie models rather than measures directly, so you know the difference between a launch monitor reading and something the app inferred. |
Excluding or deleting a shot yourself
Open any shot and use the Shot Options menu at the top right of the header. It has two actions:
- Exclude from analytics keeps the shot in the round and on the scorecard but drops it from every stat. Reversible from the same menu (Restore to analytics).
- Delete this shot removes it from the round and from every stat. It asks you to click twice. There is no undo, so use exclude when you are not sure.
A deleted shot stays hidden even if your sim PC re-reads that round later or a portal sync touches it. Neither can bring it back.
How auto-exclusion works
Two patterns trigger an automatic exclusion at ingest.
Hazard clamp. When a ball finds water or goes out of bounds, GSPro can set total distance to near zero even though you made a real swing. GSCaddie detects this when ball speed indicates a genuine shot but the recorded distance is implausibly small. Those shots stay on the scorecard but their distance data is removed from analytics.
Impossible carry. This catches carries that are physically beyond what any golfer could hit with a given club. Each club category has a realistic ceiling set well above any legitimate strong amateur shot, including downhill lies, so real long drives are never clipped. Putts and gimmes are never subject to this check.
The red data-quality flag
When a shot had its distance filtered out, the shots and round views show a small red exclamation marker next to it. Hovering it gives the reason. The flag is about distance specifically. The same shot can still carry valid ball-speed and spin data even when carry and total distance were removed.
The "est." estimate badge
You will see it in two places:
- On the strokes gained card. Strokes gained is modeled from your ball data against a handicap-based baseline, not a direct measurement. Putting is excluded from the total (simulator putting does not compare meaningfully to a real putting baseline). The number sharpens as more rounds accumulate.
- On the live range session card. Consistency and shape are estimated from ball flight with no club-delivery data available live, and carry is total distance minus roll.
For how strokes gained is built, see strokes gained. For how carry is derived, see distance and flight.
